A Good Neck Pain Pillow Does Wonders for your Neck

People spend approximately a third of their lives sleeping, so a good neck pain pillow is very important.

A well-designed neck support pillow helps people that suffer from neck pain along with preventing neck problems in non-sufferers. Neck pain, tense muscles and discomfort are increasingly common due to pillows that offer little neck support or are too soft, high, or stiff. Instead of waking up refreshed after a nights sleep, many people feel worse with shoulder, back, and/or neck pain.

Other symptoms of improper upper back and neck support include neck stiffness, numbness in the hands and arms, insomnia, headaches, and sometimes even snoring. It is important for people to realize they should replace their pillow ever year or two because they eventually break down and often cause more harm than good.

A specially designed neck pain pillow can help prevent this by supporting the necks natural curvature or lordosis:

cradling the head,

align the neck spine into a neutral position,

and enable shoulder rotation while supporting the head.

When sleeping, if you do not use a pillow or have a pillow that is too soft, your neck is unsupported, which often leads to neck strain.

Some people use two or three pillows that keep their head held too high or an extra firm or stiff pillow, which can cause inflammation from muscle strain and uneven joint pressure.

One of the best solutions for a neck pain sufferer is to replace his or her old, worn out, too soft or hard pillow with a quality, well designed, neck pain pillow. Whether your prefer a foam type pillow, poly-filled pillow, down feathered pillow, or some other type, be sure to select only a quality neck pain pillow so it gives you the support and comfort necessary for a great nights sleep.

For anyone suffering from neck pain, an aching back or insomnia, spending a little extra on a quality, neck pain pillow is worth the price when it results in your getting a comfortable, peaceful, good nights rest.

A premium, neck pain pillow should have a contour that accommodates the necks natural curves and proper posture. Whether a person sleeps on his or her back or side, a neck pain pillow needs to mold to and support the head and neck in the proper position. If you sleep on your side, your head needs pillow support approximately two inches higher than for someone sleeping on their back.

When choosing a neck pain pillow, make sure the pillow gives your head proper and adequate height support, whether sleeping on your back or side. For someone that sleeps on their back, they require a neck pain pillow that provides good upper back and neck support.

This specialized pillow should prevent their head from unnatural tilting and stop the head from rolling or going sideways while sleeping.

There are different kinds of exercises for sciatica depending on what is causing the sciatica. Sciatica is caused by spinal stenosis, herniated disc or piriformis syndrome. Each of these conditions is different and, therefore, requires different types of exercises to help relieve the pain, which may be in the foot, leg, thigh, buttocks or lower back.

Doing the Correct Exercises for Sciatica

Exercises for sciatica caused by a herniated disc are to help the pain and symptoms move from your lower extremities (feet, legs, thighs) back to the lower back. The best exercises for this purpose are press-ups or extension exercises.

The patient will lie on their stomach while propping the upper part of the body with the elbows and making sure the hips are on the floor. Hold this position for five seconds the first day and work up to 30 seconds each time. After the patient can do this easily without difficulty, the therapist will recommend holding up the upper body with their hands, making sure the arms are straight. This position will be held for only one second, but will be done ten times.

These exercises should be done every few hours.

For sciatica caused by spinal stenosis, there is a very effective stretching exercise where the patient lies on his back and pulls his knees to his chest until he feels a stretch that is comfortable. Hold this position for 30 seconds and then go back to the starting position. This exercise should be done up to six times each session.

A strengthening exercise for the sciatic pain consists of lying on the back and pushing the lower back on the floor by tightening the lower stomach muscles and pulling the belly button in and up, holding for 10 seconds longs.

Up to ten of these exercises should be done each session.

A good stretching exercise for sciatica caused by piriformis syndrome is the patient lying on their back with the legs flat on the floor. Pull the painful leg towards the chest, while holding the knee on the same side and holding the ankle with the other hand. Try to pull the knee in the direction of the other ankle until you can feel the stretch. Do not try to force it beyond this point, but hold it for up to 30 seconds. Release it and start again, doing this three times.

These exercises are just a few of the many stretching and strengthening exercises that are helpful in relieving the pain caused by sciatica. A physical therapist, spinal specialist or chiropractor will be able to give the patient an entire list of different exercises.

What to Expect From Chiropractic Medicine

It appears the general population is divided into two camps, those who believe in chiropractic medicine and those who think it is flawed science at best. Regardless of individual opinion, it can’t be denied that this practice of treating the body as a whole has helped millions of people since its birth in 1895.

The philosophy on this type of medical care is that the spine, muscle system, and all other systems of the body work together as a complete unit. When one system of the body is damaged, the others are at risk as well. So when treatment is given for the injured system, work must also be done on the other systems of the body for complete healing. Chiropractic medicine is considered to be one of the holistic healing arts.

One of the most situations that lead patients to the chiropractic medicine industry is neck and back pain, though other ailments can be helped with these practices.

Even non believers have been known to decide chiropractic care when conventional medicine doesn’t help with misalignments of the spine and other musculoskeletal issues. Logical reasoning tells us that medication isn’t going to correct an incorrect alignment of any of any of the joints of the body. It may mask the pain caused for a short period of time, but remaining on pain and muscle relaxing medications isn’t safe for the body.

Once a traditional doctor makes the decision to stop pharmaceutical treatment, the patient is often right back where they started with horrible pain that interferes with their quality of life. Once a patient tries chiropractic care for this kind of ailment, the treatments are usually a success and they can get back to the business of living.

Most people are well acquainted with going to the doctor by the time they reach adulthood. One of the biggest things that stops many people from trying out chiropractic medicine in the first place is fear of the unknown.Unlike some traditional treatments, chiropractic care is nothing to be afraid of and causes no discomfort to the patient so there isn’t anything to be worried about.

On your first visit, you can expect a tour of the facilities as many chiropractors have additional services like massage therapy and/or acupuncture specialists. A detailed medical history and description of your current symptoms will be taken. Your chiropractor may decide to take X rays of the spine or problem area to check for misalignments or minute breaks. He or she will want to be sure it is safe to treat you before proceeding.

Chiropractic medicine has grown into one of the most popular forms of treatment for people who want real help for spine and neck problems. This holistic approach to care leads to injured people living more productive, pain free lives.

Chiropractic medicine has come a long way since its beginning in 1895. Many people have been helped with chronic pain due to its holistic, natural approach to treating the body as whole.

Up to 70% of pregnant women will experience some form of back pain during the pregnancy. There are lots of reasons for this and some are less obvious than others.

One of the obvious reasons for pregnancy back pain is the increased frontal weight being carried for 9 months. Your back muscles and spine support this weight continuously and it can result in back pain. The less obvious reason is any already weak muscles in the back will be further strained during this time and conditions not originally related to pregnancy will be aggravated.

In addition, during pregnancy, there are many body changes happening that can lead to pregnancy back pain. For example, pregnancy hormones lesson the firmness of joints and ligaments. Also, pregnant women often don’t maintain proper posture because of the additional weight they carry. It’s harder to keep the spine erect and there’s a tendency to bend slightly at the waist or hips. Your baby is precious weight, but it’s weight that can play havoc with a mother’s back.

There are ways to deal with pregnancy back pain though. The first thing you can do is easy – be aware of your posture at all times. You should try to keep your spine in its correct position during the 9 months and that may prevent a lot of the back pain. Also, there are some simple guidelines you can follow that will minimize the stress on your spine:

Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees,

Don’t try to bend at the waist; always squat and use your legs for lifting,

Use ice or heating pads for back pain,

Wear an abdomen supporting garment that takes some of the load off your spine,

Wear proper shoes which means no heels (they aren’t safe to walk in during pregnancy anyway)

You should also do exercises to prevent or reduce pregnancy back pain. Yoga exercises for pregnant women have become very popular, because they are no-impact activities. They are designed to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility, but also to reduce stress. Stress can make back pain much worse.

Other low impact exercises can reduce pregnancy back pain also. Regular walking is excellent, providing both muscle strengthening and aerobic benefits. Another excellent exercise for pregnancy back pain is the pelvic tilt. This is where you lay on the floor with your knees bent. Then you flatten your abdomen against the floor and release. You can also do knee bends, side stretches and back arches.

The key to minimizing pregnancy back pain is developing strong back muscles ready to handle the additional weight in the abdomen.

The weight of the baby stretches ligaments being softened by the pregnancy hormones. No wonder so many pregnant women experience back pain. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, one of the best gifts you can give yourself is to prepare your back to become strong. You can begin back exercises before you ever find out you’re pregnant.

Neck pain can occur anywhere from the top of the shoulders to the bottom of the head. You may experience limited head and neck movement or pain that spreads to your arms or upper back. Even people taking prescription medications or other medical treatment for neck pain may find that home treatment for neck pain helps speed up their recovery. Always talk to your physician before starting any home treatment for neck pain. For chronic long lasting pain, use the same treatment for neck pain and relief methods below, except the treatments for swelling.

Treatment for neck pain that appears suddenly and is acute starts with applying ice packs to the painful area for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Cold treatments help diminish any swelling and pain and decrease muscle spasm pain. If you do not have an ice pack, fill a plastic bag with ice and wrap a pillowcase around it or use frozen vegetables wrapped in a tea towel. Be very careful you do not leave the ice pack on too long and end up with frostbite or damage to your skin. Ice the back of your neck if the pain is near your upper back or shoulder.

During the first two days after a neck injury, stay away from anything that could increase swelling, such as heat. Avoid taking a hot shower or bath and do not drink any alcoholic beverages. Once the swelling goes down which is usually from forty-eight to seventy-two hours after the injury, apply heat using a heating pad or warm pack on low. Some experts recommend a cold and heat treatment for neck pain, where you alternate between icing your neck and using a heating pad.

As part of your treatment for neck pain, encourage blood flow and relieve pain to the injured region by gently rubbing or massaging the area but only do this if it does not cause any pain. Many excellent nonprescription gels and creams on the market provide immediate pain relief. To reduce inflammation and relieve pain, there are several over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers, such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen. Never give aspirin to anyone under the age of twenty because there is a chance of Reye’s syndrome.

To prevent stiffness and keep your neck strong and flexible do neck strengthening and stretching exercises. This treatment for neck pain can help in the healing process for both chronic and acute neck pain and often helps prevent further injury.

If possible, try to modify or avoid activities that aggravate your neck pain.

Causes of Chronic Back Pain May or May Not Be Serious

Chronic back pain can be serious or may be something that can be easily taken care of with medical treatment. Many people that have back pain from time to time believe they have chronic back pain.

Chronic back pain, however, is back pain that the patient has experienced for longer than three months. Periodic back pain that has been present less than that time is considered acute pain.

Back pain, even chronic back pain, is often very hard for a doctor to diagnose. A person may have numerous tests and X-rays that all come back negative for problems and still be sufferers of chronic back pain. On the other hand, some patients can have X-rays show up serious problem and not feel any pain.

In some instances, there may be serious problems with the spine, where the person should feel severe pain or discomfort, but they feel little or no pain.

Chronic back pain is very common today. It is, in fact, the most expensive benign medical condition in the workforce and country. It is also the largest reason for limited activities in people under the age of 45. In addition to it lasting at least 3 months, it is also usually a result of serious trauma to the spine or a degenerative condition of the spine.

Other possible causes of chronic back pain

They are fibrositis, inflammation and metabolic bone conditions.

Chronic back pain, in many cases, is in the lower part of the back, thus referred to as chronic low back pain. Although doctors may give a good prognosis for chronic lower back pain, it still affects many individuals in their daily lives, often leaving many disabled for a long time. Chronic back pain is probably one of the most frustrating physical ailments, especially if doctors can’t find any “visible” reason for the pain.

After much research, doctors have now determined that the brain of a patient with chronic back pain may age as much as 20 times faster than normal. The reason is because chronic back pain is said to shrink the brain, sometimes as much as 11%. The part of the brain that it affects is the part that helps us with memory and processing information also referred to as the gray matter of the brain. Research also believes that the brain goes back to its normal size when the back pain goes away.

Another problem brought on by chronic back pain is the way it affects the quality of our life, leaving us to feel unproductive, anxious and often depressed. Chronic back pain will often cause sleeping disorders and insomnia. The reason for this is because during the day we are doing and thinking of other things other than our back pain.

When we go to bed, however, our brain “shuts down” to other thoughts other than sleep, so we are more aware of the back pain.

?Should you Have Methadone Used for Chronic Back Pain

If you have been a sufferer of chronic back pain for any length of time you have, no doubt, heard of methadone used for chronic back pain.

You may have tried many different medications in your quest for good health. When doctors prescribe medications, they have no way of knowing if they will work to help you or what reactions your body may have from the drug. It is almost like a trial and error, with the doctor trying things until they find something that works well for you.

Methadone used for chronic back pain has a good success rate when used as prescribed. It is, however, a drug that is often misunderstood and, therefore, not prescribed that often. Methadone, also referred to as Dolophine, is a narcotic pain medication used for pain ranging from medium to severe.

Besides hearing about methadone used for chronic back pain, it is also used for treating a patient with morphine addiction. Methadone used for chronic back pain may be in the form of an oral medication of used in an IV form. When it’s given as an oral dosage, some of it is stored in the liver for a later time when it is used.

When given in the form of an IV, it has much the same characteristics as heroin. One positive factor when you have methadone used for chronic pain is the sufferer is often capable of going about his normal active life without having cravings such as they would have if they were taking morphine for the pain. This is a main reason why many doctors and patients prefer methadone used for chronic back pain versus morphine.

Methadone has been used as a medication for detox purposes and because of this reputation, many doctors and patients are leery when they hear of methadone used for chronic back pain, in spite of it ability to help with the pain. You have to go to either a hospital or doctor’s office to get a prescription for the necessary dosage. It is very good for this type of pain because it’s a long acting pain reliever as opposed to the types of pain relievers that only relieve pain on a temporary basis. This is why it is recommended more for chronic back pain instead of acute back pain.

It stays in the system longer than many drugs so you wouldn’t want to use it for short term pain. Patients that experimented with methadone said that it was very successful when they realized what dosage their body required for pain relief.

The Truth behind Electric Waves for Back Pain Relief

For back pain, there is a therapy called TENS otherwise known as transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation.

In this treatment, electric currents are passed through patches placed on the skin. These electric currents are low voltage. Electric waves for back pain relief are used by some people, but there is a definite need for more research.

As the research remains right now, there is very little evidence that electric waves for back pain relief have any use for acute or chronic back pain. In fact in some studies, it has been shown that transcutaneous nerve stimulation was not any more effective than the placebo in the study. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation is most often used with labour and pregnancy pain.

When the electrodes are placed on the skin, there is a cream that is often used to increase the conductivity. Despite its lack of evidence, it is said to date back to ancient Greece. However, the device was obviously not the same.

Also used for sexual stimulation

Another unexpected use for transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation is also used in the BDSM communities for sexual stimulation. Perhaps the knowledge of this use will detour some people from using this method for back pain relief. More trivia about electric waves for back pain relief is that Benjamin Franklin endorsed and used this as a pain relief method.

Back pain is something that can vary from mild to severe, can be acute or chronic and can massively affect someone’s day to day life and their ability to perform some tasks. The desperation to find a treatment that works well can lead some people to do things that are dangerous, costly, and not overly useful. It is essential to do as much research as possible to ensure that no false therapies are being offered. The consumer or patient must be the director of their own medical care in a sense that they are responsible for the knowledge obtained before venturing into this pain relief method.

All being said and done, there are a couple things to be said about electric waves for back pain relief.

Many people today live a very complex but inactive lifestyle due in part to long working hours, lack of outdoor activity, and repetitive, tedious occupations.

This can lead to numerous health problems including neck and upper back pain. Factory workers that do repetitive reaching or heavy lifting, computer operators that sit bent over their computers for extended lengths of time or tollbooth operators that stand and lean, handing out tickets and collecting money all day, along with people in thousands of other jobs are prime candidates for neck and upper back pain.

Stay at home people that carry a baby on their hip for hours, hunching over playing video games, sitting in bed reading, playing golf, or just lazing around continuously can also result in neck and upper back pain.

The neck, shoulders, and upper back are common areas affected by too much emotional and mental stress. In other words, putting excess strain on your neck and back, practicing poor posture, stress, or not using your upper back and neck muscles enough can all lead to neck and upper back pain.

The good news is that there are numerous ways to help and prevent neck and upper back pain. Developing sensible work habits, reducing stress, practicing healthy posture, finding good physical balance, and living a healthy lifestyle, helps relieve and prevent neck and upper back pain.

Some of the traditional treatment methods used to reduce pain is chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, massage, and exercise, including several types of stretching exercises.

Yoga: For Mental and Physical Well Being

People have practiced yoga all over the world for centuries to promote mental and physical well being.

Although it took a while, yoga has become very popular in the United States today, although westerners do not practice the spiritual components of yoga as often. It is the breathing exercises and physical poses that more and more Americans are turning to and usually finding relief from neck and upper back pain.

The results from using yoga regularly to relieve physical pain, reduce stress, increase strength, and improve flexibility is amazing. Some yoga poses may require modification depending upon your back pain.

Some causes of neck and upper back pain could be more serious than poor posture, muscle tension, and strain, so if it is a recurring or persistent pain, make an appointment with your doctor. The condition and reasons for neck and upper back pain problems vary and the cause usually determines the treatment.

You should always talk to your doctor before starting any type of yoga or exercise routine if you have any known health problems.

Upper Back Pain Exercise and Other Treatments to Relieve Pain

When people experience upper back pain, many believe that any type of movement or exercise will aggravate their condition making the pain worse, so they choose bed rest or a minimum amount of movement.

The truth is that upper back pain exercise and movement often helps reduce pain faster because they are a natural stimuli. Bed rest and inactivity cannot provide a long-term solution for preventing or alleviating back pain the way regular, gradual, progressive upper back pain exercise can.

The reason exercise helps, is because it helps repair and nourish spinal structures, reduce stiffness, and keeps your back strong, flexible, and healthy.

Hot and cold treatments are effective in treating back pain, along with upper back pain exercises. Cold packs are very effective in relieving upper back pain and reducing back inflammation, especially for the first couple of days after suffering modest back pain. Apply an ice pack to the affected area for fifteen or twenty minutes, making sure the cold does not damage your skin. Leaving it on too long could cause frostbite or other problems. Repeat the ice pack treatment approximately once every hour.

Heat treatments are also very effective for treating muscular pains in the upper back, neck and shoulder areas, but you should not use them on swollen areas. Apply a heating pad, covered hot water bottle, or microwave heat wrap to your upper back to bring relief. The blood flow increases due to the heat, which then delivers extra oxygen and nutrients to the back injury and helps speed up your recovery.

Upper back pain exercise is not the only way to help relieve pain.

There are numerous methods for relieving upper back pain naturally so chances are you will find one that is just right for you. Massage therapy is an alternative to upper back pain exercise and many people find massage therapy treatment very positive and effective.

Massage therapy helps improve muscle tone, blood circulation and helps prevent muscular atrophy from inactivity or illness. Many patients that choose massage therapy over upper back pain exercise, find that they are experiencing more joint flexibility, reduced stress, and a sense of well being.

There are several forms of massage such as thee Swedish massage and Sports massage. A Swedish massage is very relaxing and helps lessen upper back pain by improving circulation, relieving stress and tension, and relaxing your muscles. The massage therapist uses kneading movements and long strokes to help your upper back. Sports massage therapist’s use finger pressure and deep, hard, slow strokes, which helps loosen contracted tendons and muscles.

Upper back pain exercise, massage therapy or other methods could help bring you relief from pain.
